Alston Chan (MBBS Year 2), a drama enthusiast, enjoyed the meetings with her mentor Ms Poon Pik Wan. “Ms Poon is an extremely experienced actress, playwright and director in a long-term collaboration with the flagship theatre company, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. The intellectual exchanges, and the drama-watching experiences with her were very fruitful and thought-provoking as I have learnt how she sees the world and how the world is reflected in her theatre productions. This is also a form of enlightenment as I have acquired a lot of insights through talking about drama with my mentor.”
Sarah Yu (BEd & BSc Year 2): “I also benefited a lot. Ms Poon shared her life experience with me, which was very inspiring. Learning from her viewpoints on a discipline that I am not familiar with, I gained much insight. Later, I, my mentor, and Alston, watched a musical together. The performance was worth watching as it integrated different elements well, and I enjoyed the time spent with them, sharing and learning different ideas and knowledge. It was also very relaxing.
Alston and me were also invited to a script-reading session of a drama that my mentor wrote. It was my first time to join a script reading, and I branched outside of my scope of knowledge. I really appreciated the work written by Ms Poon; it talked about love in life, relationships between different generations, and conflicts and struggles between different eras. There are different symbolic meanings in the drama and there was room for reflection after listening to the script.
Ms Poon has deep knowledge of literature and can write beautifully. I can learn from her and understand her more from her writing and works. My mentor is also very helpful and supportive. She is experienced and has a broad perspective on things, and she provides me various kinds of advice. It is so good to know there is someone I can turn to when I need guidance and support.”
