“The Mentorship programme provided me with the chance to meet a professional and experienced mentor, Mr Lam Chiu Ying. After a few meetings with my mentor, I feel that he is a good life coach. He has taught me how to enjoy learning, enjoy nature and enjoy my life… his advice has made me see the world and my life in a different way.
At our first meeting, my mentor asked me about my feelings about studying at HKU. At the same time, he told me his views towards the University and his own university life in the past. His viewpoints are different from those students of this generation have. Unlike students nowadays, who are either exam-oriented or are fully occupied with activities, in the past my mentor struck a balance between studies and other activities, which helped him find out his interests and future pathway. His views have made me reflect on my own university life and strengthened my determination to build a more meaningful university life. Because of him, I am trying to find my interests by joining different activities and gaining knowledge about what I am interested in.
Mr Lam also shared with me his insights and opinions towards life, human beings and culture, which have made me reflect on society and on myself. One of his advices to me is not to trust other people completely. He said it is important to doubt and think what other people say as what they say may not be totally right. Many of his ideas are things I never thought of before. I feel inspired by my mentor’s ideas, which make me think in different ways towards many things, about my future and my life, and I try to apply what he said in my daily life.
My mentor is a very experienced and optimistic person. I am very glad to have met him and listen to his experience and ideas.”
