[Helsinki] Understanding about the custom

“I have gained a better understanding of typical daily life in Finland from a local Finn. Finland, from the cultural or societal perspective, is distinctively different from Hong Kong.

The Finns have several peculiar behaviours or characteristics that might seem “odd” to foreigners (for instance, a weird fondness for sauna, quiet and shy when talking to strangers, a very high proportion of heavy metal bands). Laura is really helpful and friendly in explaining to us some of the rationales behind these traditions and habits. She made our transition during our exchange period much smoother than I anticipated. We had dinner together twice during the mentorship period, once at her apartment having an authentic Finnish meal while the other a Hong Kong style hotpot dinner at my apartment (in the photo). I enjoyed the time we had together very much.”
