Sharing thoughts

“As a Psychology student, I am in different field of study from my mentor Kit, who is in genetics, and her husband John, but their life stories and research experience are lovely to hear about! We arranged a meet-up after contacting each other via email for two months, and it surprised me that they are the kind of people I always like to know about and make friends with! They are intelligent, they tell good stories, and they are easy-going!

I am thankful for their time and effort in planning our road trip to San Francisco and Sausalito; the spots we visited were nice and very suitable for me! We went to China Town, the Observatory Deck and the De Young Museum at Golden Gate Park, took a good walk on the Golden Gate Bridge, and finished at downtown Sausalito. I especially love the visit to the De Young Museum where there was a new exhibition called Summer of Love displaying arts and fashion from the Hippies’ years. We split up and took our own walks, and afterwards Kit and John shared some history background and their thoughts about the visit. I am not so familiar with US history and the Vietnam War, so I enjoyed listening about these a lot.

They know a lot about both History and Science; they have a lot to share. They were also willing to share their own opinions on issues, and this is what I appreciated most because, to me, personal ideas are precious as somehow it is a way to open up to others. Nowadays it is not usual for people to open up to someone they just met, so I really enjoyed our first gathering, a very valuable experience for me. I can feel that they really want a connection with me.” Yeung Ting Nga, a mentee on exchange at the University of California, Davis, and Mentor Dr Catherine Lau and her husband John.
