“The HKU Mentorship Programme offered me a precious chance to enrich my once-and-for-all exchange experience by meeting HKU alumni in the US. My mentors are Professor Sau-Fong Siu and Professor Yam-Tong Siu, who have lived in Boston for more than 30 years. Undoubtedly, they are the best advice-givers whenever I have questions about Boston. When I arrived Boston in early January, my mentors invited me to have a welcoming lunch in Chinatown. I was more than happy when they talked about their undergraduate studies, their lives in the US, their family, and their teaching at Wheelock College and Harvard University. Our first meeting was full of joy.
In February, they invited me to a Chinese New Year dinner at their house. Many HKU alumni and exchange students joined this warm celebration on such a snowy night. I was grateful for their hospitality as they prepared the dinner and gave the “Chinese rooster idioms quiz” with all their hearts. Also, the inspirational conversations and the waves of laughter just made the night more memorable. At the end of March, my mentors and I took a day trip in Boston and we also attended the Spring Luncheon held by the Hong Kong University Alumni Association of Boston – New England in April. It has been a pleasure to meet these intellectuals in Boston.
Though my exchange semester is approaching the end, our mentorship and friendship will not. It is amazing to me that during this time when I was studying abroad, someone was always here to back me up. Believe me – you can gain more than you give.” Beverly Leung.
