“Firstly, my mentor, Dr C P Lau, has enriched my medical knowledge. I took Immunology and Proteins at the University of British Columbia, and despite not from the same specialty, Dr Lau provided guidance and introduced me to some medical breakthroughs in this field. In addition, he enlightened me about some recent advanced discoveries, which deepened my understanding and interest on the topics.
Dr Lau also suggested that I develop multiple interests. By sharing his experience and observations, he explained that students sometimes fall into the trap of being too focused on their own disciplines, but it was vital to get ourselves exposed to different fields, as a means of relaxation and for broadening our horizons. Dr Lau also offered me advice on my career pathway. He shared his past experience in the medical field and talked about the difference between the education systems of Hong Kong and Canada. In consideration of the trend of globalisation, he advised that I study abroad to get global exposure to widen my vision.
Dr Lau is very caring, helpful and resourceful. He assisted me solving my doubts about subjects I took and any queries I had. In addition, he took me to different places in Vancouver and on a tour around the city centre. Telling me about the history and architecture of various buildings. I got to know more about Vancouver.
When I first arrived, my Compass Card was not working. Knowing about my problem, he invited me to his house and assisted me in solving the problem. He also regularly checked in with me so see whether I had any problems with my studies and helped me to solve them.
Before I left, I invited Dr Lau to have a chat to say goodbye. I am grateful that he said I can seek his advice and stay in touch with him if I wish.”
