“Dr Yu is sociable and open-minded. I felt at ease and comfortable chatting with him. During gatherings with him, and other mentors and mentees, we talked about different topics such as music, cultures, travel and much more. It was interesting to get to know their perspectives and to see the differences between us. Dr Yu was willing to listen to my viewpoints despite some of them being different from his. I think this is the most treasured element of the Mentorship Programme, to share and respect different perspectives. Most importantly, I understand more about how a society runs and have glimpsed into the reality of my future life after university.
I tried a lot of new things with my mentorship group, such as fishing, using the fish we caught to make soup. These were completely new experiences to me. I also want to thank Dr Yu for taking us to different restaurants, which I probably would never otherwise go to. Those social occasions were definitely eye-opening and have helped me to improve my interpersonal skills, social skills and table manners.
My mentor is also very inspiring because he decided to learn new things after retiring and pursue his dreams from when he was younger. This is an important life lesson he has given me and is inspirational. Dr Yu is willing to share his experiences with mentees, and has maintained good relationships with all of them. We should be grateful to have such a mentor who can become a lifelong friend.” Kathy (3rd left, back row) with mentor Dr Yu (centre, front row), his past mentees, another mentor Mr Kwok Wai Chung (2nd right, front row), and Ms Bernadette Tsui, Director, Development & Alumni Affairs Office (3rd right, front row)
