“My mentor Mr Tai is a walking example of a versatile HKU graduate. Graduating from the Faculty of Science, he ventured into different walks of life. He started off as a science teacher but is better known as a radio programme host. For a science graduate who aspired to be a writer, Mr Tai is the embodiment of assurance.
Through listening to my mentor’s many interesting ‘adventures’ and the gathering with him and his previous mentees at the New Year, my eyes were opened to many more possibilities. His mentees are from various majors travelling different paths for themselves. I was filled with a sense of wonder when I heard Mr Tai’s story of his trip to Inner Mongolia when he was my age and when I first met my preceding mentees.
If I have to summarise the essence of our interactions, I would say that Mr Tai showed me through his experiences that we are as ‘malleable’ as we dare. We can strive and become who we want to be so long as we dare to endure the possible cost.
He is a courteous man who often shows kindness and care. He is willing to help his peers and is adventurous. It is comfortable and even relaxing to talk with him as he is very humorous. Perhaps due to his experience as a radio programme host, he is a good storyteller. It is always enjoyable to listen to his stories. No wonder my predecessors visit him every year.” Vincent Chu (third left, back row in the first photo)
