Mr Howard Elias from the Jewish Community in Hong Kong, gave an exclusive docent tour of the Hong Kong Jewish Cemetery (est 1855) in Happy Valley, for a group of mentors and mentees.
Every stone reflects the Jewish culture, religion and the history of Jews in Hong Kong. Mentors and mentees were intrigued by the stories and anecdotes of the well-known such as Kadoorie(嘉道理), Belilios (庇理羅士), Sassoon (沙宣)…and the less well-known alike.
The group also enjoyed a chance encounter with Mrs Molly Odell, daughter-in-law of the late Harry Odell (歐德禮) who founded the historic Empire Theatre (now State Theatre 皇都戲院). Mrs Molly Odell was being filmed for a documentary in the cemetery where her ancestors were laid to rest. The old home of the Odell family, Old Alberose, is now a property of the University of Hong Kong.
