[Buddhist landmark in Hong Kong]
On March 16 (Sat), alumnus Dr Ernest Ng, HKU Mentor and CEO of Tung Lin Kok Yuen 東蓮覺苑 and his colleagues hosted a group of HKU mentors and mentees with an exclusive tour of this hidden gem in Happy Valley.
Since its founding in 1935 by Lady Clara Hotung (何東爵士夫人), countless nuns and girls have been educated at TLKY which originally housed a free school for girls and a petite ecole for Buddhist practice and learning.
Everything in this monastery is captivating: the ingenious East-meet-West architecture with stained glass windows, Italian floor tiles, Buddhist statues and pagodas; the relics and antique couplets & plaques calligraphed by historic luminaries such as Kang Youwei (康有為), Zhang Xueliang (張學良), Sir Robert Hotung (何東爵士), Ye Gongchuo (葉恭綽), and Dr Lai Tsi-hsi (賴際熙太史) , Reader and Head of HKU’s Chinese Department when it was founded in 1927.
Mentors and mentees were enthralled by the stories behind and by Lady Clara’s motto “Where there’s a will there’s a way” (有志竟成), from which this magnificent living monument was born.
