HKUAA of New Zealand Committee members and mentors K Y So, Manying Ip, and Yuk Ming Ip met up with Ms Yang Jing Gladys, who is a visiting researcher at the Empathic Computing Lab at the University of Auckland. Gladys was a mentee during her exchange at HKU in 2012. She finished her Engineering degree at Tianjin University and is now a PhD student at ETH Zurich, Switzerland where she also serves as an HKU mentor supporting many exchange students.
On the afternoon of August 21, 2019, Gladys took time away from her research lab for a long lunch hosted by the HKUAANZ committee members. They drove to a suburban Chinese restaurant and enjoyed some good Cantonese food, and had engaging conversations on Swiss education and life in general, New Zealand scenery, weather and academic life. The most earnest conversation was on cake making and cuisine.
Gladys was introduced to HKUAANZ through the HKU Mentorship Office (under Development & Alumni Affairs Office). Mentees who are going to overseas for postgraduate studies or work should contact the Mentorship Office for possible connection to Alumni Chapters or Networks in the countries you are heading to. A network of HKU alumni could help you settle in to a new environment and enlarge your social circle.
